What a great beginning to the New Year when quins were delivered to a three year old pedigree Suffolk ewe on New Years eve. The 5 lambs took over an hour to be delivered and weighed in at a whopping 19.2 kilos. All the lambs survived and mum is being helped to feed her young by supplementary milk feeding. This is a very rare occurrence in the pure Suffolk breed and a bonus for all 5 lambs plus mum, Mary, to survive. The ewe was artificially inseminated by Stockton Super Sire '95 on 6th August 2011 and is owned by Andrea Gardner who farms the ewes at Higher Knowe Hill, Ellel, Nr Lancaster. Andrea originally became interested in the breed when working as Farm Secretary at Myerscough College. At Myerscough Andrea was actively involved in the breeding programme for the Suffolk Flock and in 2006 achieved the converted award for the Most Progressive Flock in the Suffolk breed. Andrea now owns her own flock of 20 females and continues to record to achieve high quality performance recorded tups.
Seen here with the lambs Andrea has two daughters who are actively involved with the flock, Jennifer (19), also in the picture, is studying to become an Occupational Therapist and Bethany (15) is at Ripley St Thomas School.
