CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS 2017 18th December, 2017 - News The Office will be closed from Friday 22nd December 2017. It will reopen on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.
REMINDER: TAIL DOCKING AND CASTRATION REGULATIONS 15th December, 2017 - News As we come into lambing season, members are reminded of tail docking and castration regulations.
Suffolks Deliver for Commercial Farmers (copy of Press Release) 21st November, 2017 - News The preliminary findings of Signet's RamCompare project have now been published and, according to the initial results, Suffolk Recorded Rams are still the market leader, sacrificing top spot on confirmation to lead the way on growth and carcass finish driving profitability for the commercial farmer.

First National Youth Championships Resounding Success 18th November, 2017 - News The inaugural National Suffolk Youth Championship (Sponsored by Norbrook Laboratories) was held on Friday the 17th November 2017 at Borderway Mart, Carlisle. With 17 participants from all over the UK and Ireland (either winners of club/branch Young Breeders/Handlers Competitions or nominations from Branches/Clubs) the standard was extremely high in both the Junior (16 and Under) and Senior (17-26) classes. A big congratulations to Annabelle Hiddleston (Dumfries) for lifting the Westcarse Senior Cup (presented by John Christie) and to James Richmond (Lancashire) for winning the Tillydesk Junior Cup (presented by Ron Greig).

MV SCHEME - RETURNING SHEEP TO PEDIGREE FLOCKS 11th October, 2017 - News It has been drawn to our attention that on occasions members may be bringing registered rams back into their pedigree flocks after having been in contact with a non-MV accredited flocks. Where this happens, the sheep are required to be retested.
New "Movie" category added to the Photographic Competition! 10th October, 2017 - News As well as sending in your photos for the categories below, we are introducing a new "Movie" category. The only stipulation is that it must be no longer than 20 seconds in length, includes Suffolks and must be in a recognisable format (mov, avi, mp4 or wmv).
CAPIELAW FLOCK TO FEATURE ON BBC LANDWARD 28th September, 2017 - News BBC Scotland's Landward broadcast on Friday 29th September at 7:30pm will be including a feature from Kelso Ram Sales. During this they will be concluding the story of Scott & Gavin Brown's CT Scanning feature from June and seeing how their top CT scanned lambs performed at Kelso!
SUPPLY STOCK RAMS TO ABPs ALPHA LAMB PRODUCERS IN GB 26th September, 2017 - News Following recent communication with ABP, the Society has become aware that there is an opportunity to supply stock rams to Alpha Lamb Scheme producers supplying ABP Yetminster in Dorset. Yetminster is the base for ABP's UK lamb slaughtering for lambs and ewes sourced throughout England and Wales using local field agents and collection centres. Focus on Maternal Traits at Ireland's National Ploughing Championship 18th September, 2017 - News On the Suffolk Sheep Society stand at this year's National Ploughing Championship in Tullamore, we will feature Suffolk x Cheviot Ewes and three pens of Suffolk Cross Ewe Lambs comprising of Suffolk X Mule, Suffolk X Cheviot and 3/4 Suffolk. We will also have a Suffolk Stock Ram on view.
SHEARLING AVERAGES UP AT KELSO 12th September, 2017 - News In the shearling ring, E A & L Jackson was the top performer in Ring 8, clearing 30 sheep at an average of nearly £1,080 with a top price of £4,000. Overall, the MV registered shearlings did really well this year with averages well up on 2016 (an increase of £158 from £655 in 2016 to £813). What is also interesting with the MV accredited Shearlings is that last year they were below the overall average price, but this year increased their average by quite a margin to come in well ahead of the overall average (£733). The non-accredited (Ring 14) also did well, they increased their average while selling more sheep.

TELEVISION APPEARANCE FOR DONEGAL BREEDER (& RAM!!) 31st August, 2017 - News Donegal Breeder Seamus Browne (Errigal Flock), along with his latest 13k Ram Lamb purchased from G Beacom at the NI Branch Premier Export Sale at the beginning of August, will be a guest on RTEs “Late Late Show”. This is Ireland's most popular and prestigious television show and is the longest running chat show in the world. The programme will be broadcast at 9:35pm tomorrow night, Friday 1 September. Northern Irish Sky viewers can get RTE through Sky channels 162 and 163, but unfortunately not in GB. We will post a link when available.
FACEBOOK LIVEFEED EXTENDED TO KELSO RAM SALES 25th August, 2017 - News Following on from the outstanding success of the live broadcast of the Society's National Show and Sale at Shrewsbury and the Scottish Area Show and Sale at Stirling, arrangements have been put in place to once again broadcast from Kelso. The show is on Thursday 7th September (starting at 4.00pm) and the sale on Friday 8th September (starting at 10.00am).

KELLS FLOCK WIN SOUTH OF IRELAND FLOCK COMPETITION - OPEN DAY 8TH JULY 4th July, 2017 - News A great day is planned for this Saturday (8th July) at the winning flock on the farm of Eamonn and Anne Marie Duffy , Ethelstown, Kells, Co. Meath. Established in 1980 and with over 130 ewes, the Kells Flock is one of the Society's largest flocks in the UK and Ireland. Please make every effort to attend.

The Suffolk Sheep Society National Youth project is underway! 26th June, 2017 - News 11th June 2017 saw the inaugural qualifier for the Suffolk Sheep Society's new National Youth Competition, at the Border Club Show, Wooler Mart, Wooler, Northumberland, by kind permission of Harrison & Hetherington and generously sponsored by CM Varley & Co. Ltd. The Club ran three classes for Young Handlers. The more informal junior 'Club' section saw enthusiastic entries and was well won by 12yo Keana Laing; her sister Beth in second place and Emily Denby 3rd. All three show great promise and will surely contest the new National Competition soon.

EARLY LAMBING DATE REMINDER 25th DECEMBER 2017 19th June, 2017 - News In October 2016 members were informed in writing that Council had agreed unanimously to introduce an early lambing date of 25th December effective from December 2017. It was also included in the Members Update Spring 2017.This means that any lambs born before that date cannot be entered in Suffolk show lamb classes or sold as ram (or female) lambs at society sales in the 2018.
BBC SCOTLAND LANDWARD VISIT CAPIELAW SUFFOLKS 12th June, 2017 - News 730pm Friday night BBC Scotland (repeated Saturday at 5:00pm). One of our top performing recorded flocks, Scott Brown's Capielaw Suffolks, have had the BBC Scotland Landward team filming CT Scanning and ultrasound on this year's lambs. Great to see Suffolks, the leading domestic terminal sire breed, featured on mainstream TV.
